...and Blues In My Pocket
CD 2008 pblues
Ainars Pūpols started to play guitar at age 14,
and right away wrote his first song. Ainars did not know that he was
hooked on blues yet. In 1975, in a magazine for young communists
"Rovestnik’’ he found his first blues notes, lyrics and very
short history of the Blues. With deep soviet pressure everywhere,
government controlling every word what You say from the stage, on radio
and television, there was no source for western music, only bad quality
tapes traveling from friend to friend with songs of The Beatles, Rolling
Stones, and Deep Purple. It was during this time Ainars formed his first
band, The Last Moment. They played homemade electric guitars through old
style radios, and their first microphone was a megaphone. But it was an
exciting band that played only a few concerts, and some dance parties.
The Last Moments lasted until one member was taken into the Soviet army.
The future bluesman quickly formed another band and won the Soviet Time
Talent contest, but still being in school, the group was not allowed to
travel and play.
At this time Ainars met the local Latvian
band leader and famed composer Martin Braun who gave the first and
only blues lesson in Ainars life. Since 1979 the blues and Ainars were
together. During the 80's Ainars Pupols made several rock bands, but
none of them got famous. When Latvia got freedom from the Soviet Union,
bluesmen started to tour around that part of Europe . Ainars' bands,
Whiskey Band and The Cucumbers played heavy blues-rock, playing songs
mostly written by Ainars. But again, the bands did not release any
albums. Ainars still have got records of those days. In 1998 the
Bluesman collected his good friends and made a studio album
’’Runaway Wolf’’, but again none of record companies in Latvia
wanted to release blues albums. In 2002 Ainars and friends made a studio
album, "Grass Street Blues” and, "Copenhagen Nights”
getting much radio airplay in Latvia, but the recordings never got
released. From 1998 Ainars traveled a lot and played concerts around
Europe, playing mostly clubs, cafe’s and bars. The Best place where
Ainars always would like to play again is "Mojo’’ - a blues bar
in the heart of Copenhagen. Of course he won't forget playing in
festival ‘Liepajas Dzintars’ together with a symphony orchestra. In
2004 Ainars met doublebass player Aivar Meijer and drummer Guntar Brech
,now they are members of Ainar Pupols & π-BLUES. In 2006 Janis
Lemezis, Ole Jonas Storli, Zigurds Latuškēvics joined the band. In
2007 the first ever original Latvian made blues album "...and Blues
in my Pocket’’ was released by Baltic Records Group. The English
version of the record is still waiting for a major release, but can be found here on Blues Detour.
